What Can You Put in a Skip? The Complete A–Z Guide

Knowing what you can and cannot put in a skip will save you time, money, and potential fines. Skip hire companies are legally responsible for the waste they collect, so they have strict rules about what's accepted.

What You CAN Put in a Skip

Most general household and construction waste is accepted in a standard skip:

  • General household waste — furniture, carpets, curtains, clothing
  • Garden waste — soil, turf, branches, hedge clippings, plant matter
  • Construction waste — bricks, tiles, timber, plasterboard (in small quantities), concrete
  • Metal — scrap metal, pipes, radiators, guttering
  • Plastics — packaging, containers, plastic sheeting
  • Glass — windows, mirrors (wrap sharp edges for safety)
  • Cardboard and paper — boxes, packaging materials

What You CANNOT Put in a Skip

The following items are prohibited in standard skips due to environmental regulations:

The 50% Rule for Heavy Materials

Skips have a weight limit as well as a volume limit. Heavy materials like soil, concrete, and hardcore should not fill more than 50% of the skip — a skip full of soil can exceed the legal road weight limit for collection vehicles.

What Happens to Your Waste?

Reputable skip hire companies are licensed waste carriers and are legally required to dispose of waste responsibly. Ask your supplier for their Waste Carrier Licence number — all legitimate operators have one.

SelectAndPay only lists verified suppliers with valid waste carrier licences, so you can book with confidence.
