Hiring a Skip for the First Time? Read This First
If you have never hired a skip before, the process can feel surprisingly complicated. There are rules about what you can throw away, where you can put the skip, how high you can fill it, and what happens if you get it wrong. Most of this is straightforward once you know the basics, but getting caught out can cost you time and money.
This guide covers the ten most important things first-time skip hirers need to know, based on the most common questions and mistakes we see.
1. Measure Your Space Before You Book
This sounds obvious, but it catches people out constantly. A standard 6 yard skip is about 3 metres long, 1.8 metres wide, and 1.2 metres tall. That is bigger than most people expect, and it will not fit on every driveway.
Before you book, go outside with a tape measure. Check the length and width of your driveway or the space where you want the skip placed. Also look up — overhanging trees, telephone wires, and low gutters can prevent the delivery lorry from safely lifting the skip into position. The lorry itself needs a clear approach and enough room to reverse in.
If your space is tight, consider a 4 yard midi skip instead. It is noticeably more compact and fits on almost any standard UK driveway.
2. You Cannot Put Everything in a Skip
This is the number one source of surprise charges. Skips are designed for general waste — wood, plasterboard, garden cuttings, old furniture, rubble, and household clutter. But there is a list of items that are banned from standard skips:
Never put these in a skip:
- Asbestos (requires specialist removal — your council can advise)
- Gas cylinders or aerosol cans
- Fridges, freezers, and air conditioning units
- Televisions and monitors
- Car batteries and vehicle tyres
- Paint, solvents, and chemicals
- Medical or clinical waste
- Plasterboard mixed with other waste (some companies require it separated)
If you put prohibited items in a skip, the company may refuse to collect it until the items are removed, or they may charge you a significant surcharge for specialist disposal. Always check with your supplier before loading anything you are unsure about.
3. Heavy Waste Has Size Limits
Not all skip sizes can handle heavy materials. Soil, concrete, bricks, rubble, and stone are classified as heavy waste, and most skip companies will only allow them in skips up to 6 yards.
The reason is simple physics: a 12 yard skip filled with soil would weigh far more than the lorry can safely lift. If you are doing groundwork, landscaping, or demolition that produces heavy waste, stick to a 4 or 6 yard skip and be prepared to hire more than one if needed.
Some companies offer dedicated "heavy waste" skips at a slightly higher price, which are reinforced for the extra weight. Ask when you book.
4. Overfilling Will Cost You Extra
Every skip has a fill line — the top rim of the skip. Nothing should stick out above this line. If waste is poking above the rim when the lorry arrives, the driver may refuse to collect it because an overfilled skip is illegal to transport on public roads.
At that point, you have two options: remove the excess waste yourself, or pay the company for an additional collection. Neither is ideal, which is why choosing the right size from the start is so important.
A good rule of thumb: if you think you might fill a 6 yard skip, book an 8 yard. The price difference is usually only £30 to £50, which is far less than the cost of a second skip.
5. Road Placement Needs a Council Permit
If you have a driveway, put the skip there. It is simpler, cheaper, and avoids paperwork. But if you need to place the skip on a public road, pavement, or grass verge, you will need a permit from your local council.
Permit costs vary from around £30 to £80 depending on your council area. Your skip hire company will usually arrange this for you, but the fee gets added to your bill. Some councils also have processing times of several days, so factor this into your planning.
The permit comes with conditions: the skip must have reflective markings, lights during darkness, and sometimes traffic cones. Your skip company handles all of this — you just need to know it takes a bit longer to arrange.
6. Standard Hire Is Usually 7 to 14 Days
Most skip hire companies include a standard hire period of 7 to 14 days in their quoted price. This gives you enough time to fill the skip at your own pace without feeling rushed.
If you need the skip for longer, you can usually extend the hire for an additional daily or weekly fee. Conversely, if you fill it quickly and want it collected early, most companies will accommodate that at no extra charge — they would rather have the skip back in circulation.
The key is to communicate with your supplier. If your project is running behind schedule, a quick phone call to extend the hire is much cheaper than a penalty for exceeding the agreed period.
7. Loading Strategy Matters
How you load a skip can make a surprising difference to how much you fit in. The most efficient approach is:
Start with flat, heavy items at the bottom. Old doors, sheets of plasterboard, flattened cardboard, and timber should go in first, laid flat. This creates a stable base.
Break down large items. Dismantle old furniture, cut long timber into shorter lengths, and flatten boxes. Anything that takes up space without actually being heavy is wasting capacity.
Fill the gaps. Once you have a base layer, fill the spaces between larger items with smaller debris, bags of rubble, or loose waste. Think of it like a jigsaw puzzle.
Keep it level. As you build up, try to keep the surface roughly level rather than creating peaks and valleys. This maximises the usable volume.
8. Prices Vary More Than You Think
Skip hire prices are not standardised. Two companies operating in the same town can charge very different rates for the same size skip. The difference can easily be £50 to £100, which is significant when you are trying to keep project costs down.
The main factors that drive price variation are: the company's own disposal costs (which depend on their recycling rate and landfill contracts), their delivery logistics, and simple supply and demand. During busy periods like spring and summer, prices tend to creep up.
This is exactly why comparing quotes matters. A two-minute price comparison on SelectAndPay can save you a meaningful amount compared to just calling the first company that comes up on Google.
9. Book a Few Days in Advance
Skip hire is not always available next-day, especially during busy periods. Spring (March to May) and late summer are peak seasons, as that is when most people tackle home improvement projects, garden clearances, and renovations.
Booking three to five days in advance gives you the best chance of getting the size you want, on the date you want, at the best price. Last-minute bookings may limit your options to whatever is available, which might mean a larger (and more expensive) skip than you actually need.
If you need a permit for road placement, add even more lead time. Some councils require up to a week to process permit applications.
10. Choose a Licensed Waste Carrier
This is a legal requirement that many people overlook. Anyone who transports waste in the UK must hold a valid Waste Carrier's Licence issued by the Environment Agency. If you hire an unlicensed operator and your waste ends up fly-tipped, you could be held legally responsible — even though you paid someone else to take it away.
Every supplier listed on SelectAndPay is verified and licensed, so you do not need to worry about this if you book through us. But if you are comparing quotes elsewhere, always ask to see the company's waste carrier licence number and check it on the Environment Agency's public register.
